University anthropologist receives Ecological Society of America ...

October 30th, 2012

As an environmental anthropologist, Shauna BurnSilver is concerned with people?s relationships with their environment, how these relationships are changing, and what this means for vulnerability and well-being. She joined Arizona State University?s faculty last year and has already earned accolades for her research. Most recently, one of her research collaborations was recognized by the Ecological Society of America with a Sustainability Science Award.

The awarded research developed out of many discussions BurnSilver had with her fellow researchers and community collaborators about how to do better science. They wanted to implement a new collaborative method that could help alleviate poverty and support sustainable livelihoods and conservation in East African pastoral regions.

?As somebody who really cares about outcomes in terms of poverty and well-being?you can?t help but begin to really think about what your research means and how it is used,? says BurnSilver, a senior sustainability scientist in the Global Institute of Sustainability and faculty member in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change.

Walmart Puts Its Boxee Where Its Mouth Is

By Brian Barrett

Streaming boxes are the future of television; there’s no point arguing it. The question is, who’s going to own it? Until now it’s largely been a two-horse race between Apple TV and Roku. But with Walmart throwing its retail weight behind the scrappy little Boxee TV, this rumble just got a lot more interesting.

GOP groups invest in Neb., NM Senate races

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican-leaning outside group is investing in Nebraska's suddenly tighter Senate race.

American Crossroads, the group organized by Republican operative Karl Rove, is spending $420,000 on the race between Republican Deb Fischer and former Democratic Sen. Bob Kerrey.

The race has been considered a clear Republican pickup after Sen. Ben Nelson announced that he would not seek another term, but recent polls have showed a closer contest.

Nate Hodson, a spokesman for American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, said they will unveil the ad on Wednesday.

Crossroads GPS also is investing $512,000 in New Mexico, where Democrat Martin Heinrich has held a lead in polls over former Rep. Heather Wilson.

Superstorm Sandy lashed the Eastern United States as it made landfall along the New Jersey coast, packing torrential rains and wind gusts and knocking out electricity to millions.

The initial impact was severe: making rivers out of coastal roads, forcing those who waited too long to be rescued by boats or fearfully ride out. Power was out for hundreds of thousands in New York City and an estimated 6.2 million across the East. Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day ? the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888. Schools and public transportation were closed and city streets were abandoned as the storm moved over a region of 50 million.

Here's a look at AP photos of the storm so far:

Syrian warplanes bombard rebels with 60 airstrikes

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes launched 60 airstrikes against rebel targets around the country on Monday, the most intense air raids across the country since the uprising began 19 months ago, according to anti-regime activists. The suburbs of the capital Damascus were particularly hard hit.

Activists said at least 500 people were killed over the four-day period ending Monday when a U.N.-backed truce was supposed to be in effect. They said the death toll for Monday so far has reached 80.

A government official said a car bomb killed 10 people on the outskirts of Damascus and TV footage showed firemen fighting the blaze amid wide destruction after parts of balconies fell on cars parked on a residential street. As smoke billowed, a woman was seen running away with children from the area of the blast and electricity cables dangled from poles. Activists said the air raids were launched both before and after the car bomb and were still under way.

Another car bomb exploded in a Damascus neighborhood where rebels are active, and state-run news agency said there were many casualties.

Monday was supposed to be the fourth and final day of a U.N.-backed cease-fire to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest periods on the Muslim calendar. But the truce was violated almost as soon as it was supposed to take effect on Friday and violence continued unabated over the holiday weekend.

The army warned late Sunday night that it will strike "remnants of terrorists with an iron fist" after they "repeatedly violated the cease-fire." The regime of President Bashar Assad often refers to those waging the uprising as "terrorists."

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said airstrikes on Monday were by far higher than on any other day since the conflict began in March last year.

"Today has seen the most intense air raids across Syria since the start of the uprising," he said, estimating there were more than 60 airstrikes nationwide by early afternoon Monday.

He said the Syrian military was trying to compensate for recent losses on the ground with airstrikes.

Muhieddine Lathkani, a London-based member of the Syrian National Council opposition group, said the air attacks were a result of the regime's "total despair" and reflect the military's inability to recapture areas it lost to the rebels.

Mohammed Saeed, an activist based in the Damascus suburb of Douma, said members of the rebel Free Syrian Army were shooting at the planes but failing to bring them down.

A Syrian official said the car bomb in the Damascus suburb of Jaramana also wounded 41 people and heavily damaged shops and apartments in the area heavily inhabited by Christians and members of the Druse minority sect.

The Observatory also reported clashes and shelling in other parts of the country including the northwestern province of Idlib that borders Turkey, where it said warplanes carried out 11 air raids on several villages. Amateur videos showed warplanes in the skies, then giant mushroom clouds of smoke after the missiles hit.

On Friday, at least 15 people were killed in a Damascus car bomb, state media said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed deep disappointment at the collapse of the cease-fire and urged more unity from the international community. Speaking in South Korea, he said the U.N. is trying to ease Syria's humanitarian woes and find a political solution to the crisis.

He called for an immediate halt to the fighting and said other countries and the United Nations need to do more to help.

"I am deeply disappointed that the parties failed to respect the call to suspend fighting. This crisis cannot be solved with more weapons and bloodshed," he said. "I remain committed to doing all I can to make this happen. As long as the international community remains at odds, the needs, attacks and suffering will only grow."

U.N. International peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Moscow that the failure of the cease-fire will not discourage him and his supporters.

"So we will continue to work as hard as we possibly can, in cooperation with everybody inside of Syria and outside of Syria to bring the level of violence, put an end to it," he said.

In Turkey, state-run Anadolu news agency said the Turkish forces fired artillery in response to a stray shell fired from Syria that landed across the northern border. The shell landed some 300 meters (yards) away from the Turkish border village of Besaslan. No one was injured, but a power line was destroyed.

With the unraveling of the cease-fire, it's unclear what the international community can do next. The holiday truce marked the first attempt in six months to reduce the bloodshed in Syria, where activists say more than 35,000 people have been killed in 19 months.

In Turkey, about 150 members of the Syrian opposition met Monday to plan for a post-Assad future, discussing the immediate challenges of managing parts of the northern Idlib province, sections of the city of Aleppo, the country's largest, and other areas that are held by rebels. Long-term planning will focus on constitutional and legal reform, laws on elections and political parties and how to build a modern national army.

Delegates to the three-day meeting at a hotel on the outskirts of Istanbul included members of Syrian rebel groups as well as the country's Kurdish minority. Abdelbaset Sieda, president of the Syrian National Council, said the Syrian regime, which he described as a "criminal group," was losing its grip on power and that the opposition must be prepared to rebuild the devastated country.

"The transitional phase has started now," Sieda said. "That's what we're witnessing clearly today in many of our cities and villages."

Great Books for Kids and Teens: It's Monday 10/29! What Are You ...

An unusual Monday here, as we wait out Hurricane Sandy aka Frankenstorm.? It is a HUGE storm, with another storm front coming down from the north to meet it, and it is heading straight for us in northern Delaware.? We are a bit inland so don't have to worry about coastal flooding, but the heavy rain and high winds are supposed to last for a few days, at least.? Roads are closed.? Schools were closed for Monday and Tuesday back on Saturday, so we have both kids at home (plus an extra one!).

On the plus side, if we lose power, I will have an excuse for more reading time!? Here's what we have been reading here:

  • I spent the week engrossed in a spooky read by one of my favorite teen/YA authors: Everfound by Neal Schusterman, the conclusion to the Skinjacking trilogy that started with Everlost, about kids caught in a sort of limbo (aka Everlost) in between the worlds of the living and the dead.? Our whole family has loved this series, and the final book is just as good - I just have a few pages to go!
  • Next up for today is another Halloween read, Night Strangers by Chris Bohjalian.
  • I am really enjoying the audio book, The Freedom Maze by Delia Sherman, about a girl in 1960's Louisiana who time travels back 100 years.? It is excellent so far, though I won't be listening much with the whole family stuck on the house with me this week!
  • My husband, Ken, finished In the Woods by Tana French, and wants to read more of her novels.
  • Next, he read another Neal Schusterman teen/YA novel, Unwholly, the sequel to Unwind, another spooky novel that we all loved!? It's a dystopian series about a future world where parents can choose to "unwind" their children between ages 13 and 18 (but it is considered ethically acceptable because every bit of them is used and transplanted).? Yeah, very creepy!? The first book was about a few teens who managed to escape on their way to being unwound.? Can't wait to read this one - Ken said it was great!
  • Last night, Ken started The Twelve by Justin Cronin, sequel to The Passage.? Both of us are excited to read this one!
  • Jamie, 18, finished City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (for the 3rd time!), but he left book #2 in his dorm room when he came home for the storm!? So, he will have to switch to another series while he is here - that shouldn't be a problem as we just received a bunch of teen/YA books from a publisher.
I didn't write or post much last week because I was sick all week, but I managed two posts late in the week: some exciting news on the adaptation of The Book Thief for stage and screen and a Weekend Cooking Post.

What are you and your family reading this week?

(What are you reading Monday is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, with a kids/teen version hosted at Teach Mentor Texts.)

Oakley's Heads-Up Airwave Goggles Will Make You a Robo-Skier

1. Oakley Airwave

Oakley's Airwave ski goggles use the latest heads-up display technology from Recon Instruments.

Click here to view this gallery.

[More from Mashable: Friends Give Coworker a Heart-Melting World Series Surprise [VIDEO]]

Imagine hitting the slopes while your favorite song is wirelessly pumped into your eardrums, GPS technology tracks your friends, and speed and jump altitudes are projected into one corner of your field of vision.

No, this isn't some futuristic dream -- it becomes reality on Oct. 31, with the release of Oakley's new Airwave ski goggles. It features a heads-up, Google Glass-like display, as well as high-tech analytics and data-tracking capabilities.

[More from Mashable: How Social Media Is Introducing NBA Fans to a Budding Star]

Powered by Recon Instruments' latest heads-up technology, the goggles allow wearers to see information, such as how fast they're traveling, maps, temperature, playlists, locations of friends, and incoming calls and messages projected, into their field of vision. All of this is displayed in the lower righthand corner of the goggles -- so users can still see the snow in front of them -- and appears to the eye as if it were displayed on a 14-inch screen five feet away.

After purchasing the goggles for $599 and downloading a corresponding iPhone, iPod Touch or Android app, wearers operate the gadget using a wrist-mounted remote control. They can then track friends who've downloaded the free app, too, but haven't necessarily bought the goggles themselves. Text messages and phone calls are displayed in the goggles, so users can either respond quickly with customizable stock messages via the wrist remote -- "call you later," for example -- or take out their phone for lengthier replies. The remote can also control music, which is played via Bluetooth in the goggles.

SEE ALSO: Could Google Glass Change Pro Sports Forever?

The app comes pre-loaded with route maps for some 600 resorts worldwide. As skiers traverse those courses, data on max speed, highest jumps, descent in altitude and comparisons to past runs are all tracked and stored. This info is viewable within the goggles via the app and heads-up display, and is available online. An Airwave developer kit also lets programming-minded users create their own third-party apps to use with the goggles.

I got a chance to demo the Airwave goggles earlier this month, and came away impressed. Granted, sitting on a couch is a far cry from smashing down snowy mountains, but the heads-up display was clear, simple to navigate and non-invasive. Tucked away in the bottom right of the goggles, it seemed like something that would be easy to ignore or quickly glance at without losing concentration.

Oakley CEO Colin Baden told me that the ski goggles are likely just the first of many heads-up display products from the sports eyewear giant. Versions for runners, cyclists and motor sports could be on the way soon, and the potential for expansion, he said, is "pretty infinite."

Do Oakley's Airwave goggles seem like something that could make their way onto your Christmas wish list? Let us know in the comments.

One more Nexus 4 render leaked, still looks like a Nexus 4

LG Nexus 4

Have we mentioned that there's a Nexus 4 coming Monday at Google's "Playground" event in New York? Yeah? Good. Here's one more render from the fine folks at @evleaks. Here we get a better look at the bezel surrounding the crystal reflective back (that's LG's new design feature first seen on the Optimus G, and here it's done in the same style as the original Nexus One live wallpaper).

There's not a whole lot to be gleaned from the screen here, either, save for this one's stock Android instead of an old custom ROM screenshot slapped on top. (That should calm the conspiracy theorists a little, maybe.) And the camera app has changed. Huzzah.

Just a couple days to go, folks.

Boston Globe: Romney rejected birth certificate changes for gay parents

Parents everywhere are rattled and horrified by the story of a Manhattan mother who came home to find two of her children murdered by their nanny, who had also tried to kill herself. Police say that the nanny stabbed the two children, aged 2 and 6, in the bathtub and then apparently slit her own throat. The mother,?Marina Kim, had briefly left their Upper West Side apartment with a third child, but came home later to find the terrible scene. Her husband, an executive at CNBC, was on a business trip and was met at the airport by NYPD officers who informed him of the tragedy. ...

Stocks waver on a big earnings day

NEW YORK (AP) ? A weak showing in home sales and a mixed batch of earnings reports kept the stock market flipping between minor gains and losses on Wall Street. With an hour left in the trading day, the major market indexes were slightly up.

A strong profit report from Procter & Gamble helped indexes start higher early Thursday, but they weakened in late morning trading after a realtor group said that the pace of contracts for new home sales had leveled off.

That turned the stocks of builders sharply lower. PulteGroup was off 3 percent, giving up an early gain. D.R. Horton fell 2 percent and Toll Brothers fell 3 percent.

In afternoon trading Thursday the Dow Jones industrial average was up five points at 13,082. It had climbed as much as 87 points earlier in the day.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose three points to 1,412 and the Nasdaq gained six points to 2,987.

"This is a market still working through a difficult earnings season," said Jason Pride, the director of investment strategy for Glenmede, a wealth-management firm.

Pride said investors probably celebrated too much after the Federal Reserve pledged more support for the economy in early September. They overlooked shrinking economies in Europe, slower growth in China and other signs that this earnings season would be rough. In the past two weeks, they've paid for it.

"We had a party and now we're dealing with a hangover," he said. "The market is basically back to where it was at the end of August. I don't think that's unreasonable."

The stock market has been in a slump for more than a week because of the weak revenue numbers and lower profit projections that have emerged from the latest round of corporate earnings reports.

The Dow gained 127 points Oct. 16 but since then has managed only two daily gains, both of them meager. The average has lost 474 points since that last significant increase.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition plunged 10 percent after its revenue came in well below what Wall Street analysts were expecting. The company also cut its forecast for full-year earnings and its stocks slumped $6.92 to $62.59.

Profits at United Airlines declined with fewer people flying, and the company fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The stock fell 77 cents to $19.50, a loss of 4 percent.

Homebuilders fell broadly after the pace of growth in home sales slowed last month. PulteGroup, which returned to profitability in the third quarter, gave up an early gain and was trading down 51 cents at $16.94. Toll Brothers fell 93 to $34.32 and D.R. Horton fell 25 cents to $21.16.

Procter & Gamble was the biggest gainer in the Dow after the consumer products company, whose products include Tide, Gillette and Charmin, reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. P&G rose $1.90 to $69.98.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 38 cents to $44.33 after reporting a 2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Apple and Amazon.com report earnings after the market closes.

As investors moved into stocks, they sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.83 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

SocGen rogue trader Kerviel launches final appeal

PARIS (Reuters) - Former Societe Generale trader Jerome Kerviel said on Wednesday he would make a final appeal to the French Supreme Court against a three-year jail sentence for his role in the nation's biggest rogue-trading scandal.

Kerviel announced he would go to France's highest court after losing his first attempt to overturn the sentence for taking huge, risky bets that cost the bank 4.9 billion euros ($6.35 billion) and hit its reputation.

Earlier in the day, the Paris appeals court upheld his 2010 conviction and demanded Kerviel repay SocGen the billions lost, potentially a life-time claim on part of his earnings.

"Without hesitation, I will call for a review of the ruling," the 35-year-old told RTL radio. Kerviel said he was shocked by the appeals judge's decision as he had hoped to be acquitted after a four-year legal battle.

The Supreme Court will rule only on whether procedures were properly followed in the previous rulings, rather than on the merits of the case. However, Kerviel cannot be put behind bars before it passes judgment.

Several outside observers said Kerviel's appeal would delay the start of his sentence for one or two years but it was difficult to see how the conviction would be overturned.

"The Kerviel affair is pretty much over for the financial community ... The appeals court has confirmed the initial verdict and the chances of the Supreme Court cancelling it are slim," said Hubert de Vauplane, a partner at Kramer Levin.

FAILED APPEAL

Kerviel has never denied masking the 50 billion euros in market positions that went wrong as the financial crisis unfolded in early 2008. However, he has always said his bosses knew what he was doing, an accusation SocGen denies.

The appeals court ruled on Wednesday that Kerviel was wholly responsible, upholding the first court's verdict from 2010.

"Jerome Kerviel was the sole creator, inventor and user of a fraudulent system that caused these damages to Societe Generale," the appeals court said in its ruling.

After the hearing, a nervous-looking Kerviel, who chewed his nails as he heard the verdict, was spared being sent immediately to prison. French law allows for a separate judge to negotiate exact terms of imprisonment.

In all, Kerviel's sentence is for five years in jail, two of which are suspended.

NO SMOKING GUN

SocGen has spent years trying to shake off the scandal, while other banks fight lawsuits over their behavior in the crisis era and the wider financial industry faces public perceptions that it is too risky.

The lack of a new "smoking gun" during Kerviel's appeal that might have radically shaken up the case meant that outside observers saw his chances of walking free as slim.

But if the judge had put any responsibility onto SocGen for the losses, the bank might have had to repay 1.7 billion euros in tax write-offs on them. The bank has already said it would be reasonable in reclaiming the 4.9 billion euros, seen as a future claim on Kerviel's earnings rather than a one-off fine.

Beef Stew in Crockpot | Peanut Butter and Peppers

Hi Everyone and Happy Thursday!

I can?t?believe?how fast time is going. ?I was reading another blog this morning and they said less than one month till Thanksgiving!! ?Holy Crappers!!! ?Once Turkey Day is here, it?s all over, we will officially be in Christmas mode! ?But one thing I like about Turkey Day is shopping Black Friday! ?Yah, I know who goes out on that day? ?I have a secret hiding spot that no one really knows about, so I get all my shopping done by 9am! ?Then I go to breakfast to my favorite Bistro and then head to Target because the crowd will be gone. ?Yup, that?s my Black Friday! ?I can?t believe I am even talking about that!! ?Do you shop Black Friday?

Since I am in the Fall mode, I have also been craving hearty comfort food! ?I think you can tell from this weeks recipes, like Wally?s Beef Chili, Skinny Vanilla Lattes?and now Beef Stew!! ?Not to toot my own horn, but I have to admit this is the best beef stew that I have made! ?My Husband agreed with me! ?We ate the whole pot and that?s four servings!! ?It?s chock full of tri-tip steak, potatoes, carrots, onion, carrots and tomatoes! ?For the seasoning I used?Worcestershire?sauce,?paprika? thyme, garlic powder and bay leaves. ?Oh my gosh was it good!! ?It?s so easy to make to!!!

The hardest thing about making this dish was the smell. ?I was home from work that day when I made this and it made the house smell so good! ?Kind of like when you go to Mom?s or Grandma?s house and you walk in there home to that warm, comforting smell. ?Yup, this stew does that!!! ?I promise if you try this recipe, you won?t be?disappointed!

Since I was home that day my Husband sent me a text asking me if I wanted to go to dinner to celebrate our 7th year wedding anniversary and I told him my phone was off and I didn?t get his message, and I told him I didn?t want to go to dinner. ?He asked why? I told him I had dinner cooking. ?He was?disappointed?and asked in a sad voice what are we having? ?I told him Beef Stew, oh my gosh did his tone of his voice change. ?He was thrilled. ?It?s one of those dishes that I don?t make to often. ?Since my Husband is a meat and potatoes kind of guy I thought I would?surprise?him with this dish for our anniversary. ?I know it?s not romantic, but he loves it and that?s all that counts!!!

We served this dish with a side of rye bread! ?For some reason we like dipping buttered rye bread into our stews and chili?s. ?Some how it?s a perfect match! ?What?I find weird is my Husband HATES wheat bread, yet he loves rye bread. ?He says it?s his favorite and our rye bread is made?with?wheat. ?I really did marry a strange guy!! ?lol

PepsiCo profit dips; more ads, new products on tap

NEW YORK (AP) ? PepsiCo Inc.'s net income dipped 5 percent in the third quarter as the snack food and beverage maker poured more money into bolstering its flagship brands and developing new products that position it for the future.

Still, profit for the company, which makes Frito-Lay chips, Tropicana juice and Quaker Oats, was above Wall Street expectations and Pepsi stood by its guidance for the year.

PepsiCo, the world's No. 2 soda maker, is trying to play catch up to bigger rival Coca-Cola Co. At a time when people in developed markets like the U.S. have grown more concerned about drinking sugary sodas, both brands have been relying more on sales of bottled teas, water and other drinks. But sodas remain a big business and Coca-Cola has grown its market share in recent years through aggressive marketing and innovative packaging.

As its share has dwindled, PepsiCo this year began working to raise the stature of its namesake cola and other key brands. The turnaround plan includes an advertising blitz with pop stars such as Nicki Minaj and athletes such as New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

The company's push to build customer loyalty has yet to take hold. In its flagship beverages unit in the Americas, the company said sales volume fell 3 percent in the third quarter; sodas declined 2 percent and non-carbonated drinks decreased by 7 percent. Without giving details, the company said the drop in the latter figure was partly because it got rid of less-profitable juice packages.

CEO Indra Nooyi said in a conference call with investors that areas in the North America beverages unit were a "work in progress."

For example, she said Gatorade volume was down in the high-single digits in part because of pricing actions. But she said the company didn't want to fall back into the trap of marketing Gatorade as a general hydration drink, as it did in 2004-2006, just to boost volumes.

"If we go back to that, we are again renting volume," she said. By instead positioning Gatorade as a drink developed specifically for athletes, Nooyi said PepsiCo will be able to charge higher prices over the long term.

The same was true of packaged bottled waters; Nooyi noted that there was a "hell of a price war" in the segment and that PepsiCo was moving away from simply chasing short-term volume spikes. PepsiCo's water brands include Aquafina.

Overall, PepsiCo's core operating profit for the period ended Sept. 8 declined 8 percent, reflecting higher costs for ingredients, marketing and pension expenses.

PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., said it earned $1.9 billion, or $1.21 per share. That's compared with $2 billion, or $1.25 per share, a year ago. Earnings from core operations were $1.20 per share, better than the $1.16 per share analysts expected.

Total revenue fell 5 percent to $16.65 billion, partly because of unfavorable currency exchange rates and the refranchising of its business in China and Mexico. That means that revenue in those countries is now recorded by PepsiCo's local partners. Analysts expected revenue of $16.96 billion.

When excluding the impact of exchange rates and other changes, revenue rose by 5 percent. The increase reflected a 1 percent jump in volume and 4 percent bump in pricing.

PepsiCo expects costs for ingredients to moderate in the fourth quarter. But for the full year, the company still expects adjusted earnings to fall by 5 percent.

PepsiCo's results come a day after rival Coca-Cola reported that its net income for the third quarter rose 4 percent to $2.31 billion, or 50 cents per share, as revenue rose 1 percent to $12.34 billion.

The Atlanta-based company said global sales volume rose 4 percent, while sales volume in North America rose 2 percent. Coca-Cola said the latter increase was driven by non-carbonated drinks such as Powerade, while soda sales were flat from a year ago.

Going forward, PepsiCo is developing products that cater to shifting tastes. Next year, for example, Nooyi said the company has launches planned for the rapidly growing energy drink segment.

She also noted that people still love the taste of cola, even if they have concerns about sugar and artificial sweeteners. As such, she suggested that the company is working on a diet cola with natural sweeteners.

Shares of PepsiCo rose 19 cents to $70.49.
