Biden, Holder push for gun safety measures

As part of a new push for substantial gun control legislation, Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday are scheduled to speak about gun violence during an event with law enforcement at the White House.

The 2 p.m. ET event is the latest effort by President Barack Obama and his team to pressure Congress on gun legislation as lawmakers return to Washington from a two-week recess.

Obama traveled to the University of Hartford in Connecticut Monday where he addressed the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and 6 school personnel were killed in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, prompting the president to call for new gun restrictions.

In his speech, Obama encouraged those gathered at the university as well as the general public to call on lawmakers to give gun control legislation a vote in Congress and support what the White House calls "common-sense" measures to reduce violence.

"If you?re an American who wants to do something to prevent more families from knowing the immeasurable anguish that these families here have known, then we have to act. Now is the time to get engaged. Now is the time to get involved. Now is the time to push back on fear, and frustration and misinformation. Now is the time for everybody to make their voices heard from every statehouse to the corridors of Congress," Obama said.

Obama flew home from Connecticut Monday evening with family members who lost loved ones in the Newtown shooting. The White House said the guests had been invited to travel on Air Force One so that they could both attend Obama's Hartford appearance and spend Tuesday in Washington lobbying members of Congress to support the legislation.

Obama is pressing for universal background checks, which is very likely to be the cornerstone of legislation to be introduced by Senate Democrats. Many Newtown family members are lending their support to the proposal.

Some Republicans have lately suggested they will filibuster any gun safety measure, a prospect White House press secretary Jay Carney called "appalling."

First lady Michelle Obama is traveling to Chicago Wednesday to speak about gun violence, and Biden will participate in a gun roundtable Thursday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Course Description:? This course will pose the question from a cultural perspective: What does it mean to be a child? The purpose of this course is to provide students with the analytical and critical skills to examine changing conceptions of childhood from ancient times to the modern era, and to deconstruct images of children as presented through multiple media.?? This blended course will utilize both on campus and online sessions using a mixture of lecture, class discussions, and will include direct observation of children?s behavior at Baby Gator and PK Yonge. The course will be structured around five themes common to all human cultures to illustrate the wide variation in the ways children?s behavior can be examined in relation to cultural norms and expectations. These themes are: family/community relations, education, fantasy/play, work, and sexuality.? This course is intended for graduate students enrolled in anthropology, counselor education, early childhood and elementary education, developmental psychology, family, youth and community sciences, and the health sciences. RED 6346 Seminar in Reading:?Language and Literacies Across Academic Disciplines (Fall, 2013, Thursday Periods 7-9)
This seminar is for graduate students who are interested in using evidence-based language and literacy practices to support learning and inquiry in academic subject areas. As the knowledge that students have to learn becomes more specialized and complex, the language that constructs such knowledge also becomes more technical, dense, and abstract, patterning in ways that enable content experts to engage in specialized social, semiotic, and cognitive practices. In order to effectively engage with the texts of disciplinary learning, students need to develop new reading/writing skills that are more embedded in each subject area, beyond those they have learned in the primary grades. This course illuminates some of the ways language is used in the core academic subjects of schooling and offers strategies aligned with the Common Core State Standards for helping students comprehend, compose, and critique the advanced texts of schooling.

?EDG 6017: Writing for Academic Purposes (Fall, 2013, Wednesday Periods 7-9)
This seminar is designed to enhance the capacity of doctoral students from all academic disciplines to write for academic purposes. It guides students through the entire process of academic writing that includes understanding the task at hand, planning the work, conducting library research, reading to gather information, developing audience awareness, appropriating discursive resources, working with other people?s ideas and voices, and using feedback and editing to improve writing. The course focuses on exploring the ways in which language is used as a creative resource for presenting information, structuring text, embedding perspectives, developing argument, referencing sources, and addressing audience needs in academic writing. It combines focused discussion of key features and issues of academic writing with practical applications through critical analysis of model essays as well as careful critique of students? own writing. The course also provides an insider?s perspective on writing for scholarly publications, including journal/publisher selection, manuscript review process, overcoming rejections, and other tips for getting published.

Exploring The Possibilities Of Home Improvement Projects ...

TIP! Do you find your house too bright or too warm? If this is the case, perhaps tinting your home?s windows will help. It?s a fairly easy project that you can do yourself.

Home improvement is a great way to save money in the current economy. You may not be able to sell your home for the price you deserve. Instead of trying to deal with getting a new home, you can always just update the one you?re already in. The article that follows will give you instructions on how you?re able to make your home feel new again.

TIP! When planning a DIY home renovation, create a step-by-step schedule. Consult with a professional builder or contractor to be sure you have left nothing out.

Instead of a slab of granite, opt for granite tile. Countertops constructed from granite slab can cost thousands of dollars. Tile looks great, and you won?t even approach the thousand dollar mark. Plus, you will save quite a bit of money.

TIP! If you have leftover baby food jars, don?t dispose of them. Instead, utilize them for organizational purposes.

A great tip for those of you with home improvement projects around the kitchen or bathroom is to make sure you remember to shut off the water. This can help you avoid any potential messes.

TIP! Before you think about making a renovation to your house, you should go to open houses in newer buildings. Styles and colors that appeal to you will be used, and give a better sense of how they look in application.

Before winter, you should thoroughly inspect the foundation of your home for any cracks. If there are any, you should fill them immediately. Insects and rodents will hide in small warm places which is why you need to seal any entry point to keep pest away.

TIP! One of the best and easiest ways to improve a dull and outdated kitchen is to instal a new sink. You home will look better instantly when you add a new sink.

You should not underestimate3 the project that you are doing. You can?t predict everything that could happen, but you need to take as much into consideration as you possibly can. This will help you deal with anything that comes your way.

TIP! A brief walk around the perimeter of your house is going to reveal tiny jobs you can do easily. For example, you could find an air leak.

When it comes to furniture, you should make sure you have just the right amount. This will only make the room appear smaller. While lots of furnishings may suit the way you intend to use a room, you should clear it out some when you?re thinking about selling. Fewer pieces of furniture will make the room seem bigger.

TIP! Do not buy furniture that is upholstered with strong patterns. Florals, bright colors and geometric shapes can force your decorating hand.

If you plan to paint your room, put down a drop cloth to protect the flooring. People often don?t realize how hard it is to clean up paint that spilled and dried on a hardwood or carpeted floor. Avoid that problem by just covering the floor before you start painting.

TIP! Wrap your water heater with a tank blanket to increase efficiency. This wrap will trap the heat in and reduce the loss of energy.

If you?re not finding a good color of grout for your needs, you can make a custom color. Acrylic craft paints, which are available at hobby and discount stores, are a simple and inexpensive method to getting the best grout color. Do some tests first; mix small quantities of grout with some paint instead of water until you find the ideal shade.

TIP! Don?t ignore small rust and mold problems. This problem, common to older homes, can quickly spread and become a large problem.

If you find that you?ve tried just about everything to make a door stop creaking or squeaking, it?s time consider buying a new hinge for the door. It?s easy to buy door hinges at any home improvement center. All you need to is attach each section to your door and the frame of your wall. Then, align the hinge parts and replace the pins.

TIP! Spend time time working on your home?s exterior and interior. You don?t want to rush when you are redesigning the interior and exterior of your house; the time and effort that you put in will be rewarded at the end.

If you want a room to look larger than it really is, move the furniture off of the walls. In addition to making your room looker bigger, it also makes it look more modern.

TIP! When you are considering home improvements, consider environmentally-friendly options. Not only is it helpful to the environment, but it can add real value to your home.

Your hot water should be drained every six months or so. A well maintained hot water heater will last longer and run more efficiently too. This process couldn?t be simpler. Your water heater has a drain valve that operates just like a garden spigot; all you need to do is locate it and attach a hose.

TIP! Try using a sponge on your drywall. Avoid sanding the seams, try to stick with sponging.

The tips in this piece will surely help you learn how to transform your house into your dream home by performing easy improvement projects. There is nothing to it but to do it!

Garbage men can do nothing as teen crushed in truck

By Ben Deighton, Reuters

A French teenager who had hidden inside a garbage container was crushed to death inside a trash truck in Luxembourg on Saturday, police said.

Garbage men discovered the 17-year-old only when he shouted out as they emptied the container into the back of the truck early on Saturday morning, but by then he was already in the grasp of the crushing mechanism.

"He cried out, but it was already too late," a spokeswoman for Luxembourg police said on Monday.

The young man, whose name was not released, died on the scene, in the city of Luxembourg.

Police have opened an investigation.

HTC One Review - Business Insider

Steve Kovach/Business Insider

The HTC One.

Until now, Android phones haven't been much to look at.?

It's a common stereotype that Android devices are only made for those who don't care about design or build-quality, and who only care about getting a phone for as cheap as possible.

The stereotype is only perpetuated by the fact that most Android manufacturers continue to make their stuff out of cheap, ugly plastic.

HTC isn't buying into that trend with its newest flagship smartphone, the HTC One, which is made from all metal and glass with some durable plastic accents. It's bigger and arguably more beautiful than the iPhone 5.?

You'll want one as soon as you see it.

HTC may be losing when it comes to brand recognition ?? all you hear about are Apple and Samsung these days ?? but it continues to make some of the best mobile devices you can buy. It feels like no one cares about poor HTC, but the One perfectly exemplifies why they should.

The HTC One goes on sale April 19. You can buy it on Sprint?or?AT&T starting at $199.99. T-Mobile customers can get it for $99.99 plus regular monthly payments for two years.

Click here for photos and a walkthrough of the HTC One's best features >

Hardware And Design

Let me gush about the design a bit more.?

It's easy enough for Android phones to distinguish themselves from the iPhone with a bunch of software extras and customization options, but this is the first time I've held an Android phone that I thought was just as solid and beautiful as anything Apple makes without being a blatant copy.

The HTC One has a 4.7-inch HD display, meaning you can watch full HD video content. (There are only a handful of devices that can do that, and the iPhone isn't one of them.) The screen's resolution is also incredibly sharp, so text and images look like they're printed on the display. There's no pixelation at all.

But the phone's aluminum body is the best part. The One's frame tapers to about 4 mm at its thinnest edge, and it has a pleasantly-curved back that makes the phone easy to hold. It's also deceptively light (143 grams), yet plenty durable. The phone has some plastic trimming, but it's a durable polycarbonate plastic that looks great and feels right at home enveloped in all that metal.?

Steve Kovach/Business Insider

The HTC One's metal body with plastic accents.

The screen is bordered by two stereo speakers that sound incredible; they're louder and clearer than any other phone speakers I've used. (Most phones only have one speaker.) It's especially useful when watching videos or listening to music, although most people will probably end up using headphones for that kind of stuff. Like many HTC phones, the One also has Beats Audio integration, a feature you can turn on in the phone's settings that's supposed to improve audio quality. But all it really does is make the audio louder; it doesn't improve sound quality at all.

The One has a special camera that HTC calls an "Ultrapixel" camera. Unlike most smartphone cameras, the One's Ultrapixel camera creates larger-than-normal pixels when taking an image, theoretically giving you a sharper picture and better low-light performance. It works. The photos I took with the HTC One were much clearer than the ones taken in the same environment with my iPhone 5, especially if there wasn't a lot of lighting.?

Battery life is on par with most smartphones. You'll likely be able to get through a day of normal use. But it does get really hot when playing games or watching videos. You won't roast your hand, but it's definitely noticeable.
?

?

As for the network, I used the Sprint version of the HTC One. Compared to AT&T and Verizon, Sprint has a tiny 4G LTE network, which is the fastest kind of data connection available. But Sprint LTE is completely absent in New York City where I did my testing. Sprint has another type of 4G that's a little slower, but my test unit couldn't connect to that. I spent most of the time stuck on 3G, which was a huge pain. It's also especially embarrassing for a top-tier device like the HTC One. (To be fair, this is Sprint's fault, not HTC's. I've heard the One works fine on T-Mobile and AT&T.)

Software And Other Features

At its core, the HTC One is still a basic Android phone. But like most manufacturers, HTC tweaked the operating system and added its own "skin" called Sense that has a slightly different design, plus other features not found in Google's basic version of Android.

The most apparent change in Sense is what HTC calls Blinkfeed, a new default home screen that pulls in photos and stories from your Facebook and Twitter connections and a variety of news sources like ESPN, AP, Reuters, and Business Insider.?Blinkfeed looks a lot like the popular news app Flipboard, and it shows you separate tiles for each story. It's a nice feature to have built into your phone.

But as cool as Blinkfeed is, I didn't like that HTC makes it your default home screen. Like most people, I use my phone for a lot more than just grazing through content shared on Facebook and Twitter and prefer to jump straight into my favorite apps instead. HTC makes you swipe over to your regular home screen to get all that. (Yes, you can store a few apps in the One's "dock" that will show up even while looking at Blinkfeed, but it's still limiting.)

I have a feeling most people will end up doing what I did and make the regular home screen their default.

Blinkfeed on the HTC One.

HTC also added some special tricks to the camera software. It has built-in filters sort of like the ones you'll find on Instagram. It also has a new feature called Zoe that takes a short video clip and lets you select one frame to share on Facebook, email, and pretty much any other service. Zoe is like a mix of Twitter's video-sharing app Vine with a little Instagram thrown in.?

The One can also serve as a universal remote for your TV thanks to an infrared blaster at the top of the device. The phone comes with a television app that pulls in data from your cable or satellite provider and lets you know what shows are on. You just have to tap a show and the channel will change. HTC uses a service called Peel to help recommend shows that you may want to watch. The setup only takes a minute and worked well, but I didn't find much practical use for it. I still prefer to use my phone for other stuff like checking Twitter while watching TV.?

Steve Kovach/Business Insider

The HTC One's remote control app.

Despite all those extras, the HTC One is still your typical Android phone. It runs a version of Android called Jelly Bean, which gives you access to Google Now, a voice-powered assistant that's better than Siri on the iPhone. Google Now makes a much better search tool than Siri, and it can intelligently remind you of stuff you care about like when to leave the office for your next meeting or when your favorite sports team is playing.

You also get access to the Google Play store where Google sells its digital apps, movies, music, books, and periodicals. Google Play's selection is about as good as the selection in Apple's App Store for iPhones and iPads, but just know developers tend to make the newest apps and big updates for the iPhone first.

Should You Buy It?

If you're ready to buy a new phone soon, you have a tough decision ahead of you. Samsung is about to launch the anticipated Galaxy S4, and a new iPhone is reportedly coming late this summer.

The HTC One is easily the most beautiful Android phone ever created, and has all the other bells and whistles you'll need. You should buy it.

Xi promises peaceful China helping neighbors

BOAO, China (Reuters) - China's President Xi Jinping pledged on Sunday that change and peaceful development will power his country's economic rise and sustain growth within its borders and beyond.

Stressing that peace was pivotal for the future of the world's second biggest economy, Xi appealed to business and political leaders to use diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes and allow wealth to spread and solve problems.

"For Asia, development is still the top question, development is still crucial for solving many problems and conflicts," Xi told a forum in Boao on the southern Chinese island province of Hainan.

"Without peace, there is no need to talk about development," to added, speaking to an audience of executives and foreign leaders including Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Myanmar President Thein Sein and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

Painting a picture of a richer China in 2020, when the government expects average rural and urban incomes will be double 2010 levels, Xi said his country would increasingly export its wealth to its neighbors.

China will import $10 trillion worth of goods a year five years from now, he said, and outbound investment will rise by a big margin. Domestic consumption, particularly retail consumption, will also continue to expand.

China imported $1.8 trillion worth of goods and services last year, up a meager 4.3 percent from a year ago as its economy slumped into its worst downturn in 13 years.

But Xi was upbeat about the future, saying growth would follow when his government changes China's economic structure and financial system. He did not give details.

"China's economy will continue to maintain a healthy growth rate," Xi said. "We will persist with reforms and doggedly pursue the path of changing our economic ways."

In contrast, an ailing global economy faces a difficult recovery fraught with risks, he said.

Xi's message of China's peaceful and inclusive rise was echoed earlier when nearly a dozen senior executives from Chinese state-owned firms met peers from top Australian banks and companies.

Andrew Forrest, an Australian iron ore magnate and founder of Fortescue Metals Group, who chaired the closed-door meeting, told reporters that Chinese state firm executives wanted Australians to know that China was not "expansionist" or "aggressive".

"They do not understand how people could look at China through anything but friendly eyes," Forrest said.

Security concerns in other countries have hampered or overshadowed the overseas expansion of several large Chinese companies, including telecoms equipment firm Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and state-owned oil company CNOOC Ltd..

(AP) ? Authorities have a video from a police interrogation room that shows a murder suspect shooting a detective to death before killing himself with the officer's gun, a person with knowledge of the investigation said Saturday.

The suspect, Jeremy Powell, was not handcuffed during questioning at the Jackson Police Department on Thursday, the person said on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the ongoing investigation.

Powell overpowered Det. Eric Smith and took his gun, shooting the veteran detective four times before shooting himself in the head inside a third-floor room of the department's headquarters, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said. Other officers heard the shots ring out and rushed to the interview room, but both men were dead.

The AP has asked for the video to be released under open records laws, but authorities have not responded to the request.

Powell, 23, was being questioned about the stabbing death of a man whose body was found Monday near a Jackson street.

Ken Winter, executive director of the Mississippi Association of Chiefs of Police, said it's not unusual for a suspect to be unrestrained during questioning.

"It depends on the demeanor of the individual at the time. I would assume that the detective had no reason to believe this guy was aggressive or he wouldn't have been interviewing him in the first place," said Winter, who spent 36 years in law enforcement as a police chief, a detective and as director of the state crime lab.

Winter also said it's not uncommon for an officer to be armed during an interrogation.

"I don't think this detective was doing anything out of the ordinary. Sometimes you can do everything right and it still turn out bad," Winter said.

Smith, 40, is survived by his wife, Eneke, a sergeant with the Jackson Police Department, and two sons.

Ramona school district, teachers union expect fact-finding report Monday

School board to set date for release to public

Friday, April 5?A three-member fact-finding panel is expected to submit its findings and recommendations on Monday, April 8, Ramona Unified Superintendent Robert Graeff said today. The report will detail the issues that have thus far hindered a contract settlement between the Ramona Unified School District and Ramona Teachers Association, he said.

The report, submitted to both parties, outlines the panel?s observations and conclusions, drawn from two days of presentations by the district and RTA on Feb. 27-28. While not binding, its recommendations are intended to help move the parties closer to a settlement after 18 months of negotiations and mediation sessions.

District? trustees will have 10 days following the release to make the report?s findings public, said Graeff, noting that the specific date will be announced shortly.

Meanwhile, Graeff said district schools will continue to operate fully under normal conditions.

?We also continue to be hopeful that we can reach a settlement with the union that is both fair to our teachers and financially responsible to the district and our taxpayers,? Graeff said.

Don't hate this player

Well, we now know two new things about the San Francisco Giants.

One, Barry Zito is now fully forgiven for the first $80 million. Call it a bonus for recent services rendered if you must, or just five years of up-front money, but when you sift out his thoroughly professional behavior in the 2010 postseason, his redemptive 2012 season, and now his performance in Friday?s home opener against St. Louis, and you?ve got a guy who has outperformed his money.

[INSTANT REPLAY: Giants 1, Cardinals 0]

Well, outperformed the resentments about his money, anyway.

And two, the Pablo Sandoval Weight story is mostly just a cheap way of defining how he?s going at any given moment. Think of it as monetizing his value, only using pounds rather than dollars.

Today, he is very svelte indeed.

The Giants? 1-0 win over St. Louis Friday was more Zito than Sandoval, to be sure, and in honesty home plate Dana DeMuth?s index-card strike zone contributed as much to the ?1? as Zito and Sandoval did the ?0.?

But the Giants must constantly redefine themselves as a tough out, especially at home, and Zito and Sandoval stood out in that category ?? Zito, for his seven innings of three-hit shutout ball, and Sandoval for showing both range and quickness at third despite what will surely be a daily flurry of fat jokes.

They both helped make the 40-minute pregame ceremonies seem a little more like 37-minute pregame ceremonies, and moved the game at a properly sprightly pace. On a team in which pitching and defense still defines its ability to succeed, pace matters, and conversely, pace means nothing when a team lives off its bat rack and strike zone discernment.

Zito?s game was not complicated; he seemed to have better strike zone command than he did in the 5-0 win over the Cardinals in the NL Championship Series last October, facing more hitters and throwing fewer pitches to do so. Only one Cardinal, Allen Craig in the seventh, reached scoring position, and that only because Zito walked Matt Carpenter with two out. At no point did he try to overthrow, or overthink, the task, and having only Angel Pagan?s bases loaded walk as run support seemed to be of no consequence.

But he did have the benefit of the ballpark to envelop the few well-hit balls from Cardinal hitters, and every one of the five ground balls went at Sandoval. He turned two of them, from Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina, into double plays, ranged well into foul ground to envelop a pop fly by Daniel Descalso, and dove to his left to snare a sharply hit grounder by losing pitcher Jake Westbrook.

The Giants are now 3-1, and hitting .210. They are averaging 2.25 runs per game. Their average game time is 2:41. And this is what they are likely to look like at their best ? taut, well-pitched-and-defended, and quick. In fact, you almost got the sense that after the pregame show, which blended baseball tradition, the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Freddie Mercury at his most clich?d, and the sea burial of an old admiral, the folks didn?t get enough actual baseball for their buck.

But that?s the tradeoff. The sellout crowd got its pomp and circumstance, the further purification of Barry Zito, a new appreciation for Pablo Sandoval in whatever geometric shape he happens to be at, and a reminder of how 2012 actually happened.

In all, a superior bargain to a bobblehead. But not quite as much fun as extra innings. Or for that matter, a second run.

Venezuela's Maduro says campaign sabotage suspects arrested

By Daniel Wallis and Marianna Parraga

CARACAS (Reuters) - Acting President Nicolas Maduro said on Friday that Venezuelan authorities have arrested several people suspected of plotting to sabotage one of his campaign rallies before an April 14 election by cutting the power.

Both sides have accused the other of dirty tricks during a bitter run-up to the vote to choose the successor to late socialist leader Hugo Chavez. Opinion polls give Maduro a double-digit lead over his opposition rival, Henrique Capriles.

"We've captured some of the saboteurs. ... One was caught red-handed," Maduro said in a televised meeting with commanders of the armed forces.

His late boss often dramatically unveiled alleged plots against his government, ranging from infrastructure sabotage to assassination plans.

"They were going to cut the electricity to the whole of Merida (state) while I was at the rally," Maduro added.

"Who is directing this war against our country? ... There are two options here: you are either for the fatherland or you're against it."

Maduro, who visited Merida on Wednesday, gave no other details about the arrests. He has ordered the military to tighten security at electricity installations.

Both sides are courting the military, which will play an important role in next Sunday's election by guarding the voting materials and polling centers.

Defense Minister Diego Molero has made statements pledging the loyalty of the armed forces to Maduro - something Capriles complains is unconstitutional.

Campaigning on the Caribbean island of Margarita this week, Capriles said it was the duty of the armed forces to protect the will of the people on April 14.

He frequently says soldiers suffer from many of the same daily problems that trouble all Venezuelans: high crime rates, inflation, and poor public services.

The vote in the South American OPEC member of 29 million people will decide not only the future of "Chavismo" socialism but also control of the world's biggest oil reserves and economic aid to a handful of left-leaning nations round the region.

The government held a ceremony at a military barracks on a Caracas hilltop to mark the exact one-month anniversary of Chavez's death from cancer. Soldiers played bugles and fired cannons in honor of the leader who was seen as a savior by millions but derided as an autocrat by his critics.

Maduro stood with top government officials and members of Chavez's family beside a marble sarcophagus where the former president's remains are encased.

FRAUD CLAIMS?

Capriles has also said that if he wins he will end "Cuban meddling" in the military. During his 14 years in power, Chavez forged close ties with communist-led Havana.

Capriles has demanded an explanation from the electoral authorities after the opposition said an audit of the voting system by both sides revealed the ruling Socialist Party had a confidential code to open 45,000 electronic polling machines.

Government officials say such allegations were laying the ground for the opposition to invent fraud claims after the vote, and that the code was only used for maintenance.

As the election nears, Capriles has gone on the attack against Maduro and his top officials, accusing them of being only "skin-deep" socialists who pay lip service to Chavez's ideology but are more interested in lining their pockets.

The government paints him as the puppet of a rich and venal Venezuelan elite and its "imperialist" friends in Washington.

On Friday, dozens of writers, artists and musicians attended an upbeat Capriles rally at a theater in a well-off Caracas neighborhood, taking the stage to sing, tell stories and read out messages calling for political change.

"I don't want this to end like this: a meeting between friends where we take some photos of each other and that's it," Capriles said, wearing a baseball cap and track suit top in the colors of the Venezuelan flag.

"I need this to go further. We have a historic opportunity."

Zeitgeist Borders shows a world of Google searches

Hal Hodson, technology reporter

CU942835.png

The world has new borders, or at least new ways of looking at the old ones. Two computer scientists have developed an application that mines Google Instant's autocompletion feature to paint a picture of the planet as Google measures it.

Google Instant works by offering up search results while users are typing in their query, based on what people commonly search for in their part of the world. Screenshots of amusing suggestions are an internet phenomenon, but Antoine Mazi?res from INRA-SenS and Samuel Huron of INRIA, both in Paris, France, used Google's algorithms to measure cultural trends instead.

The system is called Zeitgeist Borders. It lets anyone collect and analyse autocompletion suggestions from around the world for a certain phrase, pushing searches through all of the different top-level domains that Google runs, such as google.fr in France. The results are displayed on a world map, with the most popular words to complete a search term displayed for each country - though it works in English only.

Google limits the number of queries it will handle over a certain period of time, blocking IP addresses that rapidly make 10 queries, which prevented Mazi?res and Huron from doing a larger statistical study. However, the researchers have opened up the application's source code, and are currently working on ways to get around the limits. "A larger-scale analysis would allow systematic analysis of the cultural differences between countries," they write in a paper on the system which they will present next month at the Web Science conference in Paris.

One of the oddest findings was over a query about children. "Most countries ask 'why kids are the worst', or [why they] lie, but India is the only one asking why they 'vomit' and 'don't eat'," Mazi?res wrote.

'Pretty Little Liars' Earns Most-Tweeted Show on Television Bragging Rights

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Pretty Little Liars" is television's number one most-tweeted series for the first quarter of 2013, according to SocialGuide.

Even with "Walking Dead," "Big Bang Theory," and "American Idol" dominating the ratings this year, "Liars" remained the top-tweeted series across all TV and inspired 2.6 million social unique users to send out over 11.7 million 140-character messages about the show.

The drama series accounted for four of the top five most-tweeted TV episodes during the quarter - towering over AMC's "The Walking Dead" by 49 percent and FOX's "American Idol" by 50 percent, and nearly quadrupling A&E's buzzed-about "Duck Dynasty". Among all first quarter programs, "Pretty Little Liars" ranked third, behind Super Bowl XLVII and The 55th Annual Grammy Awards on ABC.

Overall, ABC Family is the number one network in the social media landscape, which is a constantly growing value to the entertainment industry. ABC Family credits the surge of their social media presence to the never-before-done announcement of spin-off series "Ravenswood" across all "Pretty Little Liars" social media platforms.

Instead of adding a statement from a proud executive to announce the accomplishment, ABC Family included a fitting hashtag: #POWEROFABCFAMILYSOCIALMEDIA.
